What Is Raw Denim

Raw denim is denim fabric that hasn't been washed, distressed, or treated in any way after dyeing. It softens and fades with wear, eventually becoming a pair of jeans that's uniquely yours—unlike any other pair in the world. If you've never quite understood what raw denim is, this guide covers the basics: what it is, how to wear it, and how to care for it.

What’s Raw Denim?

Raw denim, sometimes called "dry denim," is denim fabric that hasn't been washed, distressed, or treated after dyeing. Most jeans you buy in a store have been pre-washed, so they're soft and comfortable from day one. Raw denim is the opposite—what comes off the loom is what you get.

How to Wear Raw Denim

Raw denim starts off stiff. After a month of wear, it softens. Over time, it molds to your body. The appeal of raw denim is that no two pairs age the same way. With daily wear, it picks up marks that belong only to you—creases behind the knees, fading from friction where the fabric rubs against itself.

How to Care for Raw Denim

How often should you wash raw denim?

Raw denim doesn't need frequent washing—every 4 to 6 months is typical. But if it's dirty or smells, wash it. If you want it to fade faster, wear it more and wash it less. If you want to keep the dark color, wear it less and avoid friction. Raw denim fades irreversibly.

How to wash raw denim

Turn the jeans inside out to protect the surface color. Use cold water only. Use a gentle cycle or hand wash. Skip bleach and fabric softener. Don't wring them out—press gently to remove water. Hang dry away from direct sunlight. Never use a dryer. While still damp, smooth them back into shape.

What Is Raw Selvedge Denim?

Raw selvedge denim combines two ideas: "raw" means unwashed, and "selvedge" refers to the tightly woven edge produced on old shuttle looms. Selvedge denim is woven at a higher density and has a tighter texture, which gives it better fading depth and contrast. That's why it's considered the gold standard of denim—and why denim enthusiasts seek it out.
